Competition on mobile broadband service is very tight in Indonesia lately. Some of telecommunication companies migrates their network to provide mobile broadband service to their subscriber. Telkomsel with 3G and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is also doing the same with upgrading their technology to the latest one to give high quality of mobile broadband service. The new network upgrading from Telkomsel is by implementing Direct Tunnel technology to reduce bottle neck on the network, transmission system and reduce investment by deploying new network infrastructures. Telkomsel cooperates with Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) to implement Direct Tunnel to increase the HSDPA throughput.
Wireless modem is also another issue which should be prioritized to provide high flexibility and mobility of mobile broadband subscribers. Previously Telkomsel provided high speed internet access through 3G/HSDPA only on high end mobile phone such as Nokia 6630, 6680 N series, Sony Ericsson Z800, K618i, K610i, Motorola E1000, E770v, Samsung SGH-Z560, LG, Dopod etc. They are all mobile phone which able to enjoy mobile broadband service provided by Telkomsel to many purpose such as Vide Call, Mobile TV and Mobile Video.
To optimize their mobile broadband service than Telkomsel provides wireless modem as the common device to connect mobile broadband network which called Telkomsel Flash. Telkomsel provides Telkomsel Flash into 2 types, wireless USB modem and data card (PCMCIA). Telkomsel cooperate with several manufactures to provide wireless modem to connect their mobile broadband network e.g. Huawei (Huaewi E620), ZTE (ZTE MF320/330), OPTION Globetrotter, NOVATEL Wireless MERLIN and SIERRA Wireless AIRCARD
Network availability is the main issue on mobile broadband service. Unavailability of the service is mostly caused by high occupancy on the network while more mobile broadband traffic hit the network. IP base network is on of the solutions to reduce delay and bottle neck on the network. Implementing Direct Tunnel technology is one of the solution toward flat architecture network
