Bundling broadband devices: locked devices with specific PPP domain in PDSN (EVDO case)

While you decided to bundle your broadband service with the smartphone or any broadband devices which broadband by device manufactures, you should prepare everything to avoid problems that may come in the future and complaints from your broadband customers. Usually, while broadband provider plans to bundle their broadband service either smartphone or broadband modem, they will lock those device to avoid customers to insert MSIDN from another broadband companies. There are my types to lock those devices can be adopted by broadband providers before they launch this bundling devices (smartphone or modem) to customers. One of the common methods is locked this device with particular PPP domain while dial broadband service.

Any broadband devices, either smartphone or devices, will send a specific domain while make a session. Information that will come from broadband devices are username and password (domain), MSIDN (subscriber number), IMSI (in CDMA, EVDO platform). In EVDO cases, PDSN (Packet Data Serving Node) will receive this information and giving authorize for subscribers to access network. If information sent by devices is match with the authorization profile they have then PDSN will permit those subscribers to access the network. If information is not match then PDSN will reject this session.

Usually broadband providers and device manufactures will have agreement what kind of information will be developed in this devices. This is developed by hard code that means by default, broadband devices will always send that information to PDSN. However in many cases especially in smartphone devices such as android, blackberry and iPhone, broadband provider is allowing subscriber to change PPP domain. But for specific reason, usually broadband company locked their subscriber to change with any other domain

Bundling broadband device such as broadband modem or smartphone is one of the common types whereas broadband company will locked PPP domain with particular information to access their network. Therefore, during development process between broadband provider and broadband device manufacture, they should ensure that all information is agreed and tested in the lab before going to launch to their customers
