O2 lets you use your mobile phone as a dongle for free

What are the most attractive mobile broadband packages than free of charge? Free of charge seems will happen to mobile broadband service as well besides traditional services (voice and SMS). This is the good news we can find on the official website broadbandchoices.co.uk in term of free of charge especially in UK market. Yes, the mobile phone giant in UK, O2 has just offering new attractive package for internet service. You will get free of charge while you are using tethering on your mobile phone to access broadband service. Tethering means that you need to connect your mobile phone to laptop before starting to access broadband service

Broadbandchoices.co.uk reports that they got confirmation from O2 regarding promotion and has been released on its blog ““70% of all our new customers choose a smartphone to enjoy the internet on their phone. So we know how important data is. We’ve introduced more choice by adding a 100MB data allowance for those customers who just want to send a few emails. And for the first time, internet tethering is completely included in our data allowances, so you don’t have to pay a penny extra for it.”

O2 starts to offer attractive broadband service using smarphone by tethering and previously O2 charge for £7.65 on top of their monthly line rental. O2 mobile phone that you can do for tethering such as iPhone 4 and some HTC models

The way forward for broadband: Fixed-Mobile Broadband (FMC)

Telecomasia.net published new research on their website regarding the way forward for broadband where convergence of broadband base fixed and mobile will predominate in the future. Broadband access is now growing very fast in every country for essential needs such as gas, water and electricity. Broadband comparison between growth and develop countries is different in term of which the major broadband access they are using. In develop countries, fixed broadband is available in the majority of homes and penetration is above 60% of households in many markets.

According to the latest research that published in telecomasia.net, in the future there will be convergence between fixed broadband and mobile broadband. The research result suggest that that where fixed broadband exists, particularly in the developed markets of North America, Western Europe, and Asia, fixed–mobile convergence (FMC) solutions will predominate. The research predicted that by the end of 2015, 38% of the world’s 3.6 billion broadband subscribers will have access through both fixed and mobile networks. Although emerging markets represent a smaller opportunity for converged operators, FMC will still be important among certain user segments and should not be ignored.

Still according to the researched that published in telecomasia.net, In contrast, the fixed–mobile substitution (FMS) opportunity will account for 28% of the world’s broadband subscribers in 2015. However, this opportunity will only be viable in specific circumstances. Emerging markets with no pre-existing fixed-line infrastructure offer the greatest potential for operators, but the affordability of mobile broadband services will be crucial. In developed markets, low-end users offer some potential, but segmenting these customers will be extremely important.

Broadband provider which has both broadband service, fixed and mobile broadband will be the major beneficiaries of this trend. There will be various broadband subscribers demand in the future and combination between both fixed and mobile broadband will have more benefits

It was that subscribers should register to the service which held by telecommunication companies and three parties to have mobile shopping and content services such as ring tone, wallpaper and game. This is a registration service where subscriber should register via SMS to certainty short code and they will receive the update information about the service daily base. Subscriber then can download the content through mobile internet service e.g. GPRS or 3G service through their mobile phone. It means subscriber should do some effort before they download the contents

New innovation of Value Added Service (VAS) on mobile internet service to fulfill mobile shopping service needed by subscriber is telecommunication companies provided end to end the system to support the service. That is VAS service based on BREW platform. With this scenario, telecommunication companies provided mobile phone, application on the mobile phone and application server. BREW platform is giving an alternative solution to the low end handset instead of current mobile phone shopping which required high end handset and support WAP application (Java application)

Through the new mobile shopping service, subscriber will have more options before they decide to buy something to enrich their mobile phone. The benefits of new mobile phone shopping from the subscriber perspective are;

1. Subscriber will be able to browse to any available contents

Mobile shopping application is available on the handset and usually telecommunication companies will give free of charge to browse any content available (ring tone, wallpaper and game) on mobile internet service . They will be charge if subscriber decides to buy one or more of them

2. Subscriber can preview the content they would like to buy

Before subscriber decide to buy, they can preview the ring tone, wallpaper or game through mobile internet service to make sure that they are working and resulting as they expected

Meanwhile from the telecommunication perspective, the benefits of mobile phone shopping are;

1. Single point of service

Mobile shopping service on the mobile internet service with this scenario requires that telecommunication companies act as the single point of service which provides application server, contents and mobile phone/handset injected with BREW platform

2 Cheap tariff

Since no three parties involved in the mobile which used to provided a part of system, telecommunication companies can give a cheap tariff to the entire of service e.g. subscription service, download content etc

3. High flexibility on the system

Telecommunication companies can change the application server, manage the contents, and application on the handset anytime they want to for many reasons

The Flexibility of Value Added Service can adopt any kind of established service to be one of the features of Value Added Service (VAS) contents. For example is integrating the most popular social network right now, facebook, as part of Value Added Service (VAS) features. Usually, Value Added Service (VAS) through mobile internet service has local network features which mean that all available features are coming from dedicated local servers. In the CDMA platform, one of the valuable VAS service through mobile internet service is download content service based on BREW platform. In this case, BREW server is dedicated local server then BREW client (mobile phones) can access the service directly with no need to go to internet.

By integrating facebook as the part of Value Added Service (VAS) through mobile internet service, it means the mobile phone should be allowed to access to two paths of traffic;

Application service (download content or subscription services) to local network located on the dedicated server

Internet service but to the certainty address, that is facebook address

Since BREW client has static menus on the mobile phone where subscribers just push to the available menu and will redirect to the particular service (application service or facebook address) then, need to be designed backend system in order to meet such requirement. Some requirement need to be considered while deploying VAS service through mobile internet service which integrated with facebook feature on mobile phone is;

1. The account injected on the BREW client should be able to access application service and facebook address.

As mentioned above that there are two paths of traffic, it is critical to design routing policy on the network infrastructures that involved to this service2

2. Internet bandwidth capacity

As we know that facebook fever is happening right now and providing a cheap mobile phone embedded BREW platform with facebook feature will make people keep “on line” longer. It means that million people make a session at the same time and longer. as the result the internet bandwidth capacity will increase very significant

3. Radio Frequency (RF) capacity issue

More people will occupy the RF capacity at the same time and for long time. Resource availability is very critical to make sure that each session from subscriber will be served by network otherwise a lot of complaint will come due to subscribers are getting network busy while accessing the service

4. Security policy

It is very important to make sure that all service available on the mobile phone is controlled and no chance to the intruder to access internal network through mobile internet service to make a change the configuration and flood it with the huge unused traffic. In this scenario, Telecommunication Company should make sure that even subscriber will be allowed to BREW server located at internal network and allowed to browse to facebook address but nothing they can do except accessing to the authorized services

Telecommunication Company can not run the entire of telecommunication services without supporting from one or more three parties companies. The three parties companies which required for supporting Telecommunication Company at least two companies, they are called as vendors and content providers

1. Vendor company

Vendor is responsible to provide network infrastructures needed by Telecommunication Company to run a telecommunication service. Right now there are many types of support given by vendors to the telecommunication company. It was that Telecommunication Company should buy the entire of network infrastructures they will deploy. Vendor will responsible to install and maintain by contract agreement for certainty period and once the contract agreement is over, they can extend or cut it. In this scenario Telecommunication Company should invest much money to buy all of telecommunication infrastructures and they could come from. The infrastructures they should buy e.g. Home Location Register (HLR), Home Visitor Register (VLR), Mobile Switching Centre (MSC), more than a thousand Base Transceiver Station (BTS), Base Station Controller (BSC), Short Messaging Service Centre (SMSC), transmission system etc. they are needed to support the core network of telecommunication service and still many else needed to support more services

The new scenario is called Managed Service (MS). In this scenario vendor responsible to plan, install, operate and maintain the entire of telecommunication network day to day. Some Telecommunication Company make a deal with them that vendor should invest their equipment and share revenue they achieve. On the Managed Service (MS) scenario, Telecommunication Company will focus to create a telecommunication products and services and trying to get subscribers as many as possible

2. Content Providers (CP)

Content Providers responsible to provide many services offered by Telecommunication Company to their subscribers such as download content service. They also provide applications needed by Telecommunication Company to support their services such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application, call centre purpose. The types of cooperation also could many ways. Some of them should deploy their own application and some should just provide the contents

Actually, there are more three parties involved to the telecommunication business such as sub contractor whom usually responsible to install the telecommunication equipments

I am sure we already knew about mobile phone ESIA HIDAYAH launched by Bakrie Telecom. Through this mobile phone, we will be able to read Quran online, reminded by Azan, read Islamic book, download many Islamic contents etc through mobile internet service. Subscribers need only to push the menu bottom to browse to all features above. Perhaps some of you wonder how this is happening on the backend

ESIA HIDAYAH is working based on BREW platform. BREW is application development created by QUALCOM for mobile and it should be installed on the mobile phone as client. It means to have such service; Bakrie Telecom should cooperate with QUALCOM to have a BREW license and three parties to deploy a servers based on BREW platform and provide many contents.

The are at least two devices need to be inserted to the existing network infrastructures to have download contents services based on BREW platform;

Mobile phone injected with BREW platform

Application      servers

There are two types application that usually inserted on the mobile phone; they are WAP and BREW. WAP is the application service based on JAVA application and it needs high allocation memory on the mobile phone so then it could run well meanwhile the other one is BREW. BREW can run on the mobile phone with low memory. Therefore, Telecommunication Company can build huge mobile phones with cheap price to have Application and Download contents services based on BREW platform

BREW client is built in on the mobile phone by manufacturer. It means with different mobile phone, subscriber will not be able to access the same application and download many contents. Application servers is responsible to process all request from subscribers coming to them including charge the transaction

While subscriber browses the menus from the mobile phone, application server will look into the phone number then identify whether it is valid number or not. There two types services of application based on BREW platform, they are subscription and download content. The application servers will check the status below;

Whether subscriber’s mobile number is valid number to access BREW service e.g. balance status of prepaid subscriber, billing issue,

Whether they already subscribed to one or more subscription application. If so then application server will allow the user to browse to menus available on the mobile phone. If it is not registered yet, then application server will register the number once subscribers click a registration menu. A disclaimer then will be sent to subscriber

If subscriber will access to download content service, application server will provide various contents and deduct the balance once subscriber click a download menu

Application servers will identify each session coming to them, will analyze them and allow some to browse menus available and download contents as many as subscribers need
