After waiting for long time, finally the first WIMAX product is introduced by First Media the product called Sitra. Sitra will serve WIMAX subscribers at Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Depok areas. Sitra will also serve in North Sumatra and Aceh areas. First Media is one of the winners of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in Indonesia which running on frequency 2.3 Ghz. First Media launches Sitra WIMAX service after passing trial process period. others WIMAX tender winners are Internux, Berca Hardayaperkasa, First Media, Telkom, Indosat Mega Media, Comtronics Systems Consortium and warta Perdania, Jasnita Telekomindo, and Indonesian WIMAX Consortium.

WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) seems will be the next mobile broadband service in Indonesia after HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and EVDO (Evolution Data Optimized/Only). WIMAX has high speed internet access for wide area. By theoretically, WIMAX service can reach data rate speed up tp 70 Mbps. WIMAX service can be applied for last mile broadband connection, backhaul and high speed enterprise

With WIMAX service, provider can provides broadband wireless access (BWAP up to 50 km for fixed subscriber and 5-15 km for mobile subscribers. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 is limited only 30-100 m. the current WIMAX can provide the speed up to 40 Mbps and expected can reach up to 1 Gbps. Talking about the speed that can be guaranteed by WIMAX service, there was a misconception that WIMAX can deliver the speed up to 70 Mbps over 112.6 km. In practice, WIMAX could deliver symmetrical speed up to 10 Mbps at km with Line of sight (LOS) condition. Meanwhile in urban area, WIMAX can deliver only up to 10 Mbps over 2 km

First Media with their WIMAX product called Sitra commits to provide high speed internet access for their subscriber in Indonesia market. Beside Sitra WIMAX, First Media also will introduce fix broadband connection with the product called fastnet

Many mobile broadband providers believed that WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) will change the way how mobile broadband subscribers access to internet. Mobile broadband providers also can serve many applications which require high speed internet access such as IPTV, VoIP, online games, online music; Video-on-Demand (VoD), multimedia video, M-broadcasting and others integrated service. WIMAX service will connect people all around the world Therefore many mobile broadband providers upgrade their network to support WIMAX service and some of them deploy new network infrastructures. WIMAX global providers which already served are Urban WIMAX which based on United Kingdom that is WIMAX provider which dedicated to provide mobile broadband service with carrier class and high speed symmetric bandwidth. eeWifi is WIMAX provider based in UK that has been experiment in WIMAX in the 5.8 Ghz. Sling Broadband is WIMAX provider based in USA. Others WIMAX providers in USA are Antelecom, Inc. Broadband, Kansas Broadband internet, AT&T Alaska and many more. WIMAX providers in Russia are Yota (Scartel), Comstart WIMAX, Synterra WIMAX. Meanwhile WIMAX providers in Singapore are QMax which have 2.3 GHz licenses and Pacific Internet on 2.5 GHz

The key points to deploy WIMAX service is similar to the parameters on others mobile broadband platform such as EVDO and LTE. They are Radio Frequency and bandwidth capacities. More users they will reach, more resource they should provide to anticipate huge traffic especially during peak hour. Both parameters Radio Frequency and international internet bandwidth are the common problem on the entire of mobile broadband service including WIMAX especially when WIMAX provider gives special promotion during the first launch. To anticipate huge traffic during the promotion, there are many ways can be done by WIMAX providers to reduce high occupancy on the internet bandwidth. Bandwidth optimization which can be done such as inserting cache engine, limiting download process and other traffic engineering. WIMAX providers should make sure resource availability to reduce high churn rate at the end of month

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) which defined by the WiMAX Forum is a telecommunication protocol that provided fixed and fully mobile broadband access. WIMAX is formed in June 2010 and was developed to promote conformance and interoperability of the IEEE 802.16 standard (Wireless MAN). Meanwhile WIMAX Forum is the organization which dedicated to certifying the interoperability of broadband wireless access (BWA). WIMAX Forum will conduct the testing to ensure that different mobile broadband system from many manufactures work properly.

WIMAX is the new competition to the current mobile broadband technologies which already deployed by many mobile broadband provider. With the launch of WIMAX, it will compete with 3G service such as CDMA2000 and UMTS. There fore in many cases when there will be a plan to launch the WIMAX service, current mobile provider which already provided 3G service will join the get the license to have WIMAX service. There are many benefits while mobile provider launch WIMAX service compared current 3G service such as WIMAX offers symmetrical bandwidth over many kilometer, effective cost and reducing the cost of T2 and E1

Finally Indonesia telecommunication regulator decides that band 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz will be used for WIMAX service. WIMAX Service in Indonesia is predicted to launch at November 2010. Wimax is mobile internet service which giving high speed internet access to mobile telecommunication subscribers. Telecommunication companies and service provider who won the bidding and will launch WIMAX service in Indonesia areInternux, Berca Hardayaperkasa, First Media, Telkom, Indosat Mega Media, Comtronics Systems Consortium dan Adiwarta Perdania, Jasnita Telekomindo, and Indonesian WIMAX Consortium.

WIMAX is a short name for Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access. WIMAX is described in IEEE 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) standard. The goal of WIMAX introduction to provide fixed wireless alternative to conventional DSL and Cable Internet.

WIMAX service which has broadband wireless access (BWA) license will allow subscribers to experience high speed internet access up to 70 Mbps and has range – 30-mile (50-km) radius from base station through mobile internet service. However, actual speed will be received by WIMAX subscriber is less than 70 Mbps. Introduction WIMAX service in Indonesia definitely will give more choices for the telecommunication subscriber in Indonesia while they want to access internet with high speed access instead of current mobile internet service such as 3G and EVDO services which already came earlier. Telecommunication subscriber in Indonesia also will select which one of broadband internet access has a good performance and which one is poor. They will select the good one and leave the poor

WIMAX system consists of two part :

1. A WIMAX Base Station:

Base station consists of indoor electronics and a WIMAX tower. Typically, a base station can cover up to 10 km radius (Theoretically, a base station can cover up to 50 kilo meter radius or 30 miles, however practical considerations limit it to about 10 km or 6 miles). Any wireless or mobile internet service node within the coverage area would be able to access the Internet.

2. A WIMAX receiver

The receiver and antenna could be a stand-alone box or a PCMCIA card that sits in your laptop or computer. Access to WIMAX base station is similar to accessing a Wireless Access Point in a WiFi network, but the coverage is more.

The introduction of WIMAX service is to give alternative to the existing mobile broadband internet service which already provided by GSM and CDMA network with the service 3G and EVDO. WIMAX service is also to give alternative internet connection through WiFi which has limited coverage.
Let see whether WIMAX service in Indonesia will response well by telecommunication subscriber in Indonesia or not as the current mobile internet service
