SMS (Short Message Service) service: Mobile Originated (MO), Mobile Terminated (MT)

SMS (Short Message Service) and voice  services are traditional service which will always utilized by each of telecommunication companies beside value added service (VAS) and mobile internet service either 3G or EVDO which will be a popular service. It is like a voice and data service, SMS service is controlled by SMSC (SMS centre) which responsible to process incoming message and forward it to the proper destination number. SMS (Short Message Service) service is running under several protocol and they are SS7 (Signalling System No 7) and SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer Protocol). SS7 is responsible to make a communication with another telecommunication core network such as Mobile Switching Centre (MSC), Home Local Register (HLR) or Visitor Local Register (VLR). Meanwhile SMPP is responsible to communicate in IP domain between SMSC and its external service e.g. service provider or content provider.

In term of SMS service, while delivering SMS from source mobile number to destination mobile number usually it is divided into Mobil Originated (MO) and Mobile Terminated (MT). Mobile Originated (MO) is a sending message process from source mobile phone to reach SMSC. While your mobile phone received “message sent”, it means that MO process is succeeded. Meanwhile Mobile Terminated is message sending process from SMSC to destination phone number

While MT message will be sent to destination number, there are some action will be did by telecommunication core network such as HLR and IN to make sure that the process is valid. IN (Intelligent network) will make sure whether the calling number has sufficient balance to make SMS service and HLR (Home Local Register) will make sure whether the source and destination phone numbers are valid numbers, registered and active.

Mobile Originated (MO) and Mobile Terminated (MT) process will succeed if authentication process on Intelligent Network (IN) and HLR is passed. Balance and registration status are the main authentication process
