Base Transceiver Station (BTS) is the technical term for a mobile phone base station. A BTS could be contained of transmit and receive technology and also the aerials to supply a radio cell. Several BTSs are administered by a BSC (Base Station Controller). BTS (Base Transceiver Station) is a part of telecommunication infrastructures located nearest to the mobile telecommunication subscribers. When subscriber makes any sessions either voice call or data call (e.g. mobile broadband service), BTS will receive this session at the first time and than forward it to the core network to get proper service. BTS is major telecommunication infrastructures which can usually have highest priority when telecommunication companies plan to expand the network or to improve the quality of the network

BTS which will be installed should have maximum capability but can reduce the cost. As you know that engineering part such as building stage is the most expensive part while deploying the BTS. Out door BTS is one of the solution to reduce the cost and total investment of BTS building. Besides leasing the building part, building a shelter for the BTS it self and others support system is also take much cost. Therefore, out door BTS could be the best option to reduce the cost.

Once telecommunication companies decide to use out door BTS, they should select the best product which meet some requirements to make that the BTS can handle the traffic properly and can reach maximum capability of its BTS. others parameters that should be considered is that out door BTS will be installed in the out door, safety and high flexibility while installing the equipment is the thing that should be prioritize. The parameters which should be on the our door BTS are:.

a) Very high transmission power

b) Large capacity

c) Convenient and flexible installation

d) Good transmission capability

e) Good adaptability for the field environment

f) Super Environmental Adaptation

g) Great Output Power, Achieving Wide Coverage

h) Mature & Reliable Frequency Carrier Module

i) Flexible Power Adaptability

j) Flexible Transmission Solution

k) Rapid & Reliable Software Online Update

l) Quick Startup

Smart Telecom is only one telecommunication companies in world which running EVDO Rev B to their mobile broadband subscribers. With EVDO Rev B technology, Smart Telecom can give high speed internet access to their subscriber up to 9.3 Mbps for download and 5.4 Mbps for upload. Coverage is the main issue while mobile broadband subscriber wants to access high speed internet access. Therefore, Smart Telecom prepares 42 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) while launched EVDO Rev B technology in Bali. Unfortunately it is taking a few months only before they occupied by huge mobile broadband traffic.

Beside the coverage area issue, wireless modem is another issue which commonly anticipated by producing bundling modem. Smart Telecom cooperates with ZTE to provide wireless modem for their mobile broadband subscribers. Smart Telecom is using wireless modem with CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology to support their mobile broadband service. Their wireless modem that has been in the market is MV140B and ZTE USB Modem AC2728. Both wireless modems is to support EVDO Rev A technology

Compared to EVDO Rev B, EVDO Rev A is giving lower speed which can reach up tp 3.1 Mbps for download and 1.8 Mbps for upload. To give maximum speed experience for their mobile broadband subscriber, Smart Telecom should prepares high capacity on the network which including, Radio Frequency (RF) capacity, backbone transmission and international internet bandwidth. This is the critical point to any mobile broadband provider while they decide to provide high speed internet access either through EVDO Rev B, EVDO Rev B, 3G or others technologies. More mobile broadband subscribers they want to achieve than more network capacity they should provide to accommodate traffic growth

Smart Telecom with EVDO Rev A and Rev B they already deployed anticipate this issue by providing both service on the particular area to maximize the service. In other word, only subscribers in this area are able to enjoy mobile broadband service provided by Smart Telecom

Mobile broadband provider should make sure that their service will have the best one compared to their competitors. To provide the best mobile broadband service, there are some requirements to make sure that the service should reach maximum speed internet access up to 3.1 Mbps and stable network connection. To meet both conditions, mobile broadband provider should prepare the network environment before they launch or get more complaints from the mobile broadband subscribers

The best mobile broadband service provider will do some action below before they launch the service;

Allocating dedicated channel for mobile broadband service one each Base Transceiver Station (BTS)

High Radio Frequency (RF) availability to cover traffic growth

Proper configuration on Base Station Controller to get maximum speed of mobile broadband service (up to 3.1 Mbps)

Dedicated transmission network to deliver huge mobile broadband service and back up link to anticipate network connection problem

Proper configuration on the layer 3 protocol such as router and switch which can affect to the mobile broadband subscriber while accessing the internet

Proper charging rule which acceptable and fair

No issue on inter connection between each of core network such as Home Local Register (HLR), Intelligent Network (IN), AAA server and PDSN which can generate delay response to deliver the traffic

Sufficient international internet bandwidth

Security system to protect undesired traffic from outside or inside such as DDOS attack

The best mobile broadband service provider will consider the parameters above before they launch the service. Those mentioned above is pre requirement to anticipate that the service will have no failure and delay points while the traffic hit the network. The best mobile broadband service also will do upgrading to the network regularly.

The best mobile broadband service provider will able to anticipate the problem that may come caused by the network and can take proper actions in the sort time and minimum risk which affect to the mobile broadband service. Quick analyze to the network environment can be done while the problem comes and quick execution as well. That is the best mobile broadband service we are looking for

Once telecommunications companies have decide to have mobile broadband service meanwhile previously they provide CDMA 1x or GPRS service than they need to prepare upgrading the network to support mobile broadband service. There are many network elements which should be upgraded such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS), Base Controller Station (BSC) and increasing the capacity of transmission media (backbone). Major upgrading on the core network element is mandatory to have the next generation network platform from previous one. Telecommunication companies with CDMA platform need to upgrade their network to EVDO platform to have mobile broadband service as the next network. Meanwhile telecommunication companies with CDMA platform should upgrade to 3G platform to have mobile broadband service

There are more network element should be upgraded to support mobile broadband service. Upgrading the capacity of the network interface on the router, switch/catalyst is the thing that can not be missed. If CDMA 1x or GPRS services require fast Ethernet which can handle maximum throughput 100 Mbps, mobile broadband service require 10 times of that capacity. Upgrading the network to have Giga byte throughout should be done to all of network element which involve to the mobile broadband service. Network interface of charging gateway also need to be upgrade to handle huge traffic that will hit the charging gateway. Each interface should be upgrade to the Giga byte Ethernet or optical fiber port. Huge traffic that will hit the network element is the main reason why network port should be upgrade to Giga byte or optical fiber port.

The network interface port on the servers which server part of mobile broadband service such as streaming and download contents, game services also should be upgraded to Giga byte or optical fiber port. The same way should be done on others network elements such as firewall, bandwidth management, cache engine etc. Upgrading the network to support mobile broadband service is to anticipate huge traffic which definitely will come and prevent network bottleneck.

It was that Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the only one option for people to make communication with someone else. Few years later, technology was changing and people prefer to use mobile communication (GSM) rather then PSTN. The main reason is mobile communication is giving more flexibility rather than fix communication (PSTN). Mobile communication (GSM) support their activities much better rather fix communication (PSTN). As the result, now days we can see mobile communication (GSM) is growing faster rather than fix communication (PSTN)

From the technology perspective, growth of mobile communication (GSM) infrastructures is giving more benefit since they have flexibility and more simple during deployment rather than fix communication (PSTN) infrastructures. Telecommunication company which plan to deploy telecommunication network with mobile platform such as GSM, CDMA and 3G will invest many kind of telecommunication infrastructures which upgradeable, high compatibility with others vendor and high availability of resource to support many service such as mobile internet service. We can not find the same things right now if we will deploy the same telecommunication network with fix platform such as Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)

Evolution of telecommunication technology reduce inefficiency equipment while deployment which used to happen on fix communication platform (PSTN) such as cabling on each termination point. As we know that Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is having a lot of cabling connection from one point to another one. On the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) service, if Telecommunication Company has 1000 subscribers on particular area means that they should run 1000 peer cables from terminal cable point to each of subscriber home

We will not find the same thing on the mobile communication (GSM, CDMA or 3G). Telecommunication Company with mobile platform will deploy Base Transceiver Station (BTS) on particular area to cover people who want to make a mobile communication at that area. They will upgrade the capacity while they face lack of resource at that area with simple way and faster. The same thing will happen to all services including mobile internet service. Meanwhile on the fix communication service such as Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Telecommunication Company will face big issue once they want to upgrade the capacity at the same area.

Beside, people begin to leave Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) service for personal purpose, the new technology is created to replace the old one which mean that old technology should be replaced. In the next few years, we will find Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) service no more

It used to happen that telecommunication companies replace the current telecommunication infrastructures to support telecommunication service such as mobile internet service to the new one for one or more reasons. It could be the capacity issue, interoperability to others telecommunication systems, upgrading to the new version and more features of telecommunication devices etc. There will be a lot of activity will be done by telecommunication companies while swapping schedule is started such as perform mobile internet service test. They should do many tests to make sure that telecommunication services are working proper before and after swapping of old telecommunication infrastructures
What I mean swapping here is replacing the telecommunication core network such as Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) as the core network of to support telecommunication services such as mobile internet service. As we know that Huawei platform was deployed in many Indonesia telecommunication companies. It is possible that Huawei will replace as well current MSC from another platform. And while swapping process is occurring, Telecommunication Company should do many testing to make sure that telecommunication services are running well. These are what they will do during this activity

1. Swapping the current/old Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Transceiver Controller (BSC) platform
This means that old hardware will be no more in service at that area which covered by all of those equipment. Usually telecommunication companies will relocate the old one to the new area

2. Migrate the new Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Transceiver Controller (BSC) platform to the new Mobile Switching Centre (MSC)
This means telecommunication companies should install new telecommunication infrastructures above to replace the old one

3. Testing to the entire of telecommunication services
After swapping is completed the next step is resting to the entire of telecommunication service such ensuring that Voice, SMS and mobile internet service are working fine and Value Added Service (VAS) as well such as download content service. They should do this testing one by one and note if the test is passed or not. They should make a call to own network, long distance call and international call through certainty prefix (VOIP) or International Direct Dial (IDD). They also should send SMS to many numbers and do dial up connection to make sure that Data Service is running perfectly.
If one or more tests are not passed that they should roll back to the previous telecommunication infrastructures. We can say that the swapping process is fail. Telecommunication services such as mobile internet service should run properly after this swapping.

How the call service is going? How subscriber can send SMS to their friend, family and partner? How you can access mobile broadband internet service through mobile phone or modem connected to laptop/computer? All telecommunication services mentioned above are running through telecommunication systems which installed by telecommunication companies. Telecommunication system responsible to handle telecommunication service requested by subscribers, process it and generate proper output. Telecommunication system is connected from one network element connect to another one. Any failure or disturbance to one or more network element of telecommunication system will interrupt the request of telecommunication system from subscriber. As the result, subscriber will fail to retrieve telecommunication services, either voice, SMS, mobile internet service or Value Added Service (VAS)

What are telecommunication systems which responsible to handle subscriber’s request?
1. Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
2. Base Station Controller (BSC)
3. Transmission media
4. Home Local Register (HLR)/Visitor Local Register (VST)
5. Mobile Switching Centre (MSC)
6. Intelligent Network (IN)

Telecommunication systems above are the core network element where any kind of telecommunication services will come and go through those network elements. The next level is depending on what kind of telecommunication service is requested by subscribers. Different telecommunication service will be served by different network element of telecommunication systems. The network elements which responsible to process the requests from subscriber are;
1. Short Messaging Service Centre (SMSC)
2. Public Data Service Node (PDSN), GGSN/GPRS
3. Application server

Application server is network element which responsible to handle services based on application service such as mobile internet service for billing purpose, Value Added Service (VAS). There could be many kinds of VAS service such as download contents, subscription service, Ring Back Tone (RBT) service etc. Therefore there will be a lot of application server on the telecommunication system and it will more and more. Telecommunication system should be installed with redundant system to make sure that the entire of telecommunication services are running well event though one or more network element of telecommunication systems are getting problems

The main issue on mobile broadband internet service is the Radio Frequency (RF) capacity and international internet bandwidth. To make sure that both point failure will always keep in service, telecommunication companies will do some preventive actions while they decide to launch mobile broadband internet service. Mobile broadband internet service is utilizing huge resource of both bandwidth and RC capacity and doing some action to prevent bottle neck is the best action to reduce huge complaint from mobile telecommunication subscribers

The first thing is providing backup link to internet service provider. Telecommunication companies could have more than one of internet service provider to forward the traffic of mobile broadband internet service. Both internet service providers could be load share the traffic or active and standby. Actually telecommunication companies should invest much money to have more than one internet service provider. As you know that leasing internet bandwidth in Indonesia is very expensive compared to others country. As the result, usually redundant system of internet bandwidth to support mobile broadband internet service is given lower bandwidth compare to primary link. It is about a half of primary bandwidth capacity. For example if primary bandwidth link has 100 Mbps than secondary bandwidth link will have 50 Mbps. In addition, the secondary link is a backup link and no traffic as long as primary bandwidth link is UP

The second thing to prevent outage on broadband internet service either 3G or EVDO is upgrading the network capacity especially Base Transceiver Station (BTS), Base Station Controller (BSC) and transmission media. There will be huge traffic of broadband internet service will come to BTS and BSC. Telecommunication companies will increase the capacity on both network elements to handle that huge traffic. By upgrading BTS and BSC mean that telecommunication companies should install more BTS and BSC at the current area to support huge traffic from broadband internet service. Despite of adding the number of BTS and BSC, telecommunication companies also need to install more transmission capacity to carry out the huge traffic

To meet mobile telecommunication subscribers which always grow up, each of telecommunication companies should plan their telecommunication infrastructures to have smooth processing while they should migrate to the next technology. High demand on broadband internet service either 3G or EVDO service is giving new opportunity for each telecommunication companies to provide broadband internet service instead of traditional wireless internet service e.g. CDMA 1x Rtt and GPRS. High demand on broadband internet service is also giving a challenge for each telecommunication companies especially to provide smooth migration from the traditional network to the next generation network. There are many things need to be prepare once telecommunication plan to migrate current technology to the next technology generation.

The first thing, they should decide which the next technology proper to the current one. Suppose, telecommunication companies have CDMA platform and CDMA 1xRtt is the technology to provide wireless internet service, then the proper next technology is EVDO (Evolution Data Only/Optimized). CDMA 1xRtt technology will give limited speed (153 kbps) to wireless internet subscriber. It is not recommended speed to compete with telecommunication companies which offer broadband internet service with 3G platform. Migrating to the EVDO technology is the best solution to give high speed internet experience to the mobile internet service

The second thing is trial EVDO technology to the existing CDMA 1xRtt platform. Trial is intended to identify whether any interoperability issue between CDMA 1xRtt with EVDO platform. Usually telecommunication companies will assign particular Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Base Station Controller (BSC) with Public Data Service Node (PDSN) which already have EVDO license. EVDO platform should give high speed internet experience up to 2.7 Mbps while testing. EVDO is the next generation of CDMA 1x platform and it means there will be no significant changing on the current telecommunication infrastructure while they deploy EVDO platform

The third is upgrading the current CDMA 1x platform to the EVDO platform. EVDO is high speed internet access which requires high capacity on each network element which supports it. Network element which should be upgraded to the high capacities is Base Transceiver Station (BTS), backbone transmission and internet gateway.

Performance of telecommunication services should be monitored every single hour to make sure that availability network is sufficient to handle traffic of telecommunication services. Performance of telecommunication service indicates whether telecommunication companies have a good or poor telecommunication system. Better performance of telecommunication service means better telecommunication network and vice versa. There are many ways how telecommunication companies monitor the performance of telecommunication service. They could be reporting the statistic of each service daily bases, alerting the resource availability of telecommunication infrastructures which handle telecommunication service via SMS and 24 hours monitoring to the each element of telecommunication infrastructures

1. Statistic report of telecommunication services

Telecommunication companies should generate of performance of telecommunication system every day. Statistic report will describe how the quality of telecommunication service they offered to the mobile telecommunication subscribers. Statistic report will also be used to analyze the whole telecommunication service when their revenue is going down.

2. Alerting resource availability

The whole of telecommunication infrastructures should be noticed how much the current occupancy, how much resource available. Both will be identified in percentage. Telecommunication company will broadcast SMS alerting to particular people who responsible to each telecommunication infrastructures that could be hourly bases. By alerting the resource availability, performance of telecommunication service can be monitored and quick response can be taken once anomaly happened to the telecommunication service

3. Twenty four hours monitoring

Telecommunication companies will put some people to work regularly twenty four hours and seven days to monitor each of telecommunication infrastructures. They will take quick action once a problem comes to the one or more telecommunication infrastructures. This team will notice the performance of telecommunication service at the first time once it goes down

Telecommunication companies will take further actions based on current performance of telecommunication service. For example, if the performance of broadband internet service is poor, they will analyze the statistic report, how often problems come to network element of broadband internet service. After they analyze the performance of telecommunication service for certainty period for example one month then they can decide which the best action they will take. In case of broadband internet service, telecommunication companies can increase the international bandwidth or install more Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
