Telecommunication companies which has wireless internet service such CDMA 1x and GPRS are not recommended to provided BlackBerry service due to internet access speed reason. However, wireless internet service they already have can be utilized to provide the similar service on the Blackberry service such as email service, Facebook application and messaging service (Yahoo Messanger, Gtalk, WLM etc). Other applications also can be developed there to differentiate it with the service on the mobile broadband service. BREW platform is the term to overcome the problem on wireless internet service to introduce high application on the low and middle mobile phone

To deploy facebook application on wireless internet service, telecommunication companies should prepare below network infrastructures:

client server BREW application

wireless internet network which including Public Data Serving Node (PDSN), Charging Gateway, AAA server and CDMA network which including BTS, BSC and HLR

Internet gateway to connect to outside (Facebook.com)

The key point to introduce Facebook application on wireless internet service which actually has speed up to 153,6 kbps is deploying client – server BREW application. The key parameters while deploying client – server application are:

How much maximum speed can be consumed by low end mobile phone which will access Facebook application

Memory utilization and disk capacity that will be allocated on the mobile phone

Client application in this case is Facebook client that will be inserted on the mobile phone with BREW platform. Algorithm and applications details should be pre-defined and should match with the Server before they deployed on the mobile phone. Meanwhile Server application is middle ware server which interact with mobile phone and facebook server. Beside the algorithm and protocol that should have match with the client, server application should proper and same with algorithm on the facebook server as well. This algorithm which called Facebook Algorithm Programming Interface (API) should be synchronized every time once facebook server made any changing

Introduction facebook application on wireless internet network such as CDMA 1x and GPRS has many potential issues while the traffic is increasing. Facebook application is the most popular social networking right now and presenting this service on the low and middle mobile phone will be definitely responded massively by mobile telecommunication subscribers. in this stage, huge potential problem will come with various complaints, errors and problem on the facebook application

There are many reasons why facebook application is getting error. The errors that may comes to mobile phone users while they access the application such as, error connection, network problem, application is temporary unavailable, session is expired, there seems to be an errors on the application and many else. Those errors are commonly coming from the wireless network and facebook application itself especially on the Facebook Application Programming Interface (API). When the errors comes from wireless internet network such as error in connection and network down, the problem will appears to the entire of wireless internet service and not only to facebook application. Telecommunication Company understands well what they should do while this error comes to mobile phone users while accessing facebook application or others wireless internet services such as CDMA 1x or GPRS. However when the errors come from the facebook application itself such as Application Programming Interface (API) protocol than the real problem to facebook application is coming. Application Programming Interface (API) is set of software so one software can interact with others software. Application Programming Interface (API) is required by mobile facebook developer to interact with facebook application. Open source Application Programming Interface (API) protocol is the most popular one used by mobile facebook developer while they deploying mobile facebook client on the middleware server. The main issue is that this open source Application Programming Interface (API) changing more often and without notification to mobile facebook developer to synchronize their facebook clinet. And the result, mobile phone with facebook client will always generate many errors caused by this Application Programming Interface (API) changing

Mobile broadband providers should install many network elements in case this is the first deployment of mobile broadband or data service. For them who already have the data service such as CDMA 1x and GPRS, they only need to upgrade the network element to support mobile broadband service. Upgrading the network is including, upgrade the RF network capacity, increasing the international internet bandwidth capacity and upgrading the interface capacity on the network such as Router, Switch and Firewall

The primary of network elements that should be installed to have mobile broadband service includes, Public Data Servicing Node (PDSN), Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) Server, Charging Gateway, Internet Gateway. Meanwhile in core network, usually they already existed by utilizing current network elements such as BTS and BSC. Both of core network elements are used to be upgraded the license to support mobile broadband service. However if mobile broadband providers migrate to the different platform, suppose GPRS to WIMAX or CDMA 1x to WIMAX then they need to change the entire of network elements including BTS and BSC.

Others network elements of mobile broadband that should be considered are data comm networks such as router, switch and firewall. Even though they already existed in current network but we need to give more attention about the its capability to handle huge traffic that will come from mobile broadband subscribers. Transport network such as transmission media also needs to be upgraded to carry out huge traffic. Migrating to the optical network is the common strategy to prevent network bottle neck

Meanwhile in the border which will connect to the outside (internet and three parties), security system should be deployed to prevent undesired traffic from mobile broadband subscribers or outside (internet or three parties). Firewall, cache engine and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) should be deployed to make sure the network security

Once telecommunications companies have decide to have mobile broadband service meanwhile previously they provide CDMA 1x or GPRS service than they need to prepare upgrading the network to support mobile broadband service. There are many network elements which should be upgraded such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS), Base Controller Station (BSC) and increasing the capacity of transmission media (backbone). Major upgrading on the core network element is mandatory to have the next generation network platform from previous one. Telecommunication companies with CDMA platform need to upgrade their network to EVDO platform to have mobile broadband service as the next network. Meanwhile telecommunication companies with CDMA platform should upgrade to 3G platform to have mobile broadband service

There are more network element should be upgraded to support mobile broadband service. Upgrading the capacity of the network interface on the router, switch/catalyst is the thing that can not be missed. If CDMA 1x or GPRS services require fast Ethernet which can handle maximum throughput 100 Mbps, mobile broadband service require 10 times of that capacity. Upgrading the network to have Giga byte throughout should be done to all of network element which involve to the mobile broadband service. Network interface of charging gateway also need to be upgrade to handle huge traffic that will hit the charging gateway. Each interface should be upgrade to the Giga byte Ethernet or optical fiber port. Huge traffic that will hit the network element is the main reason why network port should be upgrade to Giga byte or optical fiber port.

The network interface port on the servers which server part of mobile broadband service such as streaming and download contents, game services also should be upgraded to Giga byte or optical fiber port. The same way should be done on others network elements such as firewall, bandwidth management, cache engine etc. Upgrading the network to support mobile broadband service is to anticipate huge traffic which definitely will come and prevent network bottleneck.

Authentication process

Authentication process is the critical issue on mobile broadband service. Authentication process will determine how secure the network while unauthorized user try to access the mobile broadband service. To protect the service, telecommunication provider applies some security procedure before the access the service. Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server is the network element which is designed and implemented for that purpose on mobile internet service such as CDMA 1x, 3G, EVDO and WIMAX

PAP and CHAP

There are two type of authentication procedure which can be implemented on mobile broadband service which can be applied on PDSN or GPRS. They are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). PAP and CHAP can be implemented on the mobile broadband service but for the security purpose, telecommunication provider used use Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) method due to more secure than PAP

Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) method is simple authentication where mobile broadband customer need only to send some parameter from the Mobile Station (MS) and then Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server will identify those parameter before they allow to access the service. Meanwhile Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) method process is more complicated than PAP since there will be a challenge that will be added while Mobile Station (MS) will establish the connection. Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server will indicate the challenge which is delivered by Mobile Station (MS) to PDSN and AAA, if all parameters requires is matched than authentication process pass and vice versa

Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) method will identify some parameters which is sent by mobile telecommunication subscriber such as International Mobile Subscriber Identify (IMSI), username and password (encrypted or decrypted). Meanwhile Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) method will send more parameters beside those parameters on PAP such as challenge and message ID through Message-Digest algorithm 5 (MD5) algorithms. The procedure on CHAP will guarantee that the mobile broadband service will have only authorized users only to access the service

EVDO overview

EVDO is one of mobile broadband service which giving high speed internet accesss to mobile telecommunication subscribers. Evolution Data Optimize/Only (EVDO) is the next data service platform of CDMA 1x. EVDO service will guarantee single user receiving download speed up to 3,072 Mbps compared to CDMA 1x which maximum can reach 164 kbps. By launched EVDO service telecommunication companies need to expand the capacity of network element such as Base Controller (BSC), Base Transmission Station (BTS) and definitely international Bandwidth internet

Pre-launch EVDO service

EVDO Rev A has max physical layer throughput 3,072 Mbps unfortunately it is very difficult while testing EVDO Rev through throughput testing tool such as NEMO and QXDM which can test on the application layer, will have throughput less than 3,072 Mbps e.g. 2,99 Mbps etc

Telecommunication companies need to test the throughput on several cell sites before they launch EVDO service. They can do this by doing access to internet directly and get the throughput while downloading huge file and doing FTP to get and put huge file on local network

Poor throughput and handoff

Two things which should be anticipated by telecommunication companies before they launch EVDO service is eliminate the cell sites (BTS) which have poor throughput and hand off process either from one BTS to another one or from EVDO network to CDMA 1x. Poor throughput could come anytime on EVDO service and caused by many things. Usually poor throughput on BTS is caused by RF capacity or high utilization on the BTS. Telecommunication companies should prepare to add more BTS capacity or redirect the close BTS to the BTS which has poor throughput. Meanwhile handoff process is very critical case to make sure that all sessions will have smooth process while mobile telecommunication subscriber move from one BTS to another one or from EVDO network to CDMA1x

Facebook fever is definitely optimized by several telecommunication companies to spoil their subscribers and keep loyal. Usually Telecommunication Company integrated the facebook application into Value Added Services (VAS) through mobile internet service. This is totally different with accessing facebook through Opera Mini or WAP applications. While accessing through both application means subscribers access to facebook using wireless or mobile internet access directly either CDMA 1x, 3G, GPRS or EVDO. Meanwhile through VAS service, subscribers should do some effort to get access to facebook such as subscripting via SMS etc

There are several types of integrating facebook application to the VAS services through mobile internet servicethat can be adopted by Telecommunication Company.

1. Partial facebook feature via SMS

It was that subscriber need to subscribed to facebook service provided by telecommunication company to get some features of facebook such as updating the status, adding new friend and commenting on the friend’s status. This is SMS or text service where subscriber will not view full features of facebook. All activity did by sending a SMS with particular format to the short code provided by Telecommunication Company. In this scenario, Telecommunication Company will forward the request sent by subscribers to facebook address. The benefit is any mobile phone can do this service which means that subscriber can access the facebook with Telecommunication Company as the mediator to facebook address.

2. Full facebook feature via BREW platform

It is different with service mentioned above, in this scenario subscriber can access fully facebook feature through their low mobile phone with embedded BREW platform. The problem to access facebook directly through mobile phone is it is requiring high end mobile phone with Java Application to support WAP or Opera Mini applications. Telecommunication Company should provide mobile phone with embedded BREW platform and definitely with cheap price. In this scenario, fully features of facebook is part of VAS service through mobile internet service so there will be a lot of services on the mobile phone such as download content, subscription services, etc.

Integrating facebook to the VAS service is revolutionary service and believed will produce massive responded from subscribers at the short time. In addition, Telecommunication Company provides a cheap mobile phone to with many attractive features. The thing need to be anticipated by Telecommunication Company is the internet bandwidth capacity since subscriber predicted will keep connected to internet for long time
