TalkTalk is one of UK internet service provider which currently is trialing wireless extender device on their Labs subsidiary. In many cases, mobile broadband signal has limited coverage due to building, distance and many else which impact to the mobile broadband speed. Wireless Extender is one of device which can be used to strengthen to broadband signal. Wireless Extender increase the distance over which a WLAN signal can spread, overcoming the restriction and enhance the network signal quality. Wireless Extender is also known as “range expanders” or “signal boosters.

TalkTalk plans to recruit 100 customers ideally who feel their current wireless range is sub-standard and then TalkTalk will perform some Pre-Extender and Post-Extender diagnostic comparisons using TalkTalk Labs Desktop. The Wireless extender can be placed at anywhere within the home. To get the testing result, you should install and run TalkTalk Labs Desktop on their PC for analysis purposes.

Wireless extender is working as a relay or network repeater. Wireless Extender is picking up and reflecting WiFi signals from a network’s base. However the thing you should know is that network performance of devices connected through a range extender will generally be lower than if they were connected directly.

There are many parameters influence the mobile broadband speed. The signal quality is one of the most parameters which impacting to the mobile broadband quality. Therefore, many broadband providers including TalkTalk are making some enhancement to increase the signal performance. Wireless extender is one of the options to increase the signal distance

Compare mobile broadband service is really important for both customer and broadband providers. Customer can learn how the quality of broadband service and how they way the compare them. Broadband providers also will know how their service quality and then taking advance performance to achieve best service. Compare broadband service usually includes several broadband services provided by providers such as home broadband, mobile broadband and smarthphone. Using the broadband tools is the best way to compare those broadband services. There are many broadband tool we can test to compare broadband service such as broadband speed test, broadband speed tester, broadband download monitor, WAP key generator and WEP key generator

Broadband speed test is broadband tool which we can use to indicate whether your internet connection is having fast or running slowly. Broadband speed test will send small file and how time how long your connection takes to download it. The size of the file will vary according to the speed your connection is supposed to be running at. Broadband tester will measure the speed at which your broadband is running

The other broadband tool you can test to compare broadband service is broadband download monitor. Broadband download monitor is a tool to track your download and alert you when you get near limit. Broadband download monitor is used when your broadband provider limit on how much you can download every month and usually you have to pay if you exceed this limit. The Broadband Download Monitor is running by calculating how much traffic in your broadband modem or a network router device that you specify

WAP key generator is a broadband tool that will generate unique WAP keys to protect your broadband connection from hacker and neighbors who trying to pingback your broadband connection. Meanwhile WEP key generator is the same tool like WAP key generator that will generate unique WEP keys

Broadband modem device is one of critical elements while broadband providers plan to launch the service. More broadband modem they provide to subscriber is better to support to high performance of network connectivity. Usually, broadband provider will provide two types of broadband modem interface to subscribers; Ethernet and Universal Serial Bus (USB). It is depending on the requirement, for the personal purpose subscribers prefer to select USB broadband modem interface. Meanwhile for sharing purpose, subscriber will select Ethernet broadband modem interface such as router modem

There are many advantages and disadvantages for both broadband modem interfaces, Ethernet and USB. However Ethernet interface is preferable to connect broadband service rather than USB. Ethernet broadband modem interface can support data rate up to 100-1000 Mbps. Meanwhile USB can support up to 12 Mbps for USB 1.0 and USB 1.1 and 480 Mbps for USB 2.0

USB broadband modem interface is more getting dropped connection rather Ethernet interface. Ethernet interface more reliable to connect broadband network. More over, USB interface can reach up to maximum 5 m only, while Ethernet can reach up to 100 m. Ethernet interface does not require driver software to install as required on USB interface. Some USB modem will work on particular operating system and will not support to others one. For such case, broadband providers should deploy new USB modems which support the latest operating system. Overall, Ethernet broadband modem interface is having higher performance to connect the broadband network rather than USB interface

To reduce disadvantaged on the USB modem, broadband provider cooperates with manufactures to increase its performance and definitely can reduce its cost. Current USB modem will have higher data rate speed and easy to use. Some of USB broadband modems already equipped with installation driver inside the USB then subscribers can use it once plug to laptop.

What is Long Term Evolution (LTE)?

Long Term Evolution (LTE) will be the next technologies for mobile broadband service which capable to have potential bandwidth up to 100 Mbps for downloading and 50 Mbps for uploading. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a 4G wirelesses broadband technology as the next generation of 3G which designed to increase the capability, speed of mobile broadband network and its performance. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)

It is dramatically evolution when mobile broadband provider plan migrating the current broadband service to Long Term Evolution (LTE). There will be many upgrades to current mobile network especially backbone transmission to carry out huge traffic from mobile broadband service. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is designed to have high level performance of mobile broadband service such as reduce the cost per bit, increase the service provisioning, flexibility of frequency bands, simplified the network architecture and minimum power consumption

Long Term Evolution (LTE) Technologies

To provide high data rates and more efficient to the use of spectrum, Long Term Evolution (LTE) introduces some new technologies such as:

1. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex)

OFDM is allowing us to get high data bandwidth, efficient to be transferred and high degree of resilience to reflection and interference

2. MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Outputs)

MIMO will able to increase the signal’s throughput

3. SAE (System Architecture Evolution)

SAE is designed to reduce the latency time where required to transfer high data rate for LTE

Long Term Evolution (LTE) will give much advantage for the mobile broadband providers and mobile user itself. Mobile user will experience high speed internet access up to 300 Mbps for download and 50 Mbps for uploading. Meanwhile mobile broadband provider will achieve high revenue while they can provide this service

Data optimization

To have high performance of mobile broadband service either 3G, EVDO or WIMAX service, mobile broadband provider should do many efforts on the telecommunication networks. Data optimization is one of the important things need to be executed on the telecommunication networks with many strategies and scenarios. Since mobile broadband service requires high bandwidth utilization, optimization on transport layer will affect to the entire of mobile broadband performance.

Data optimization on transport layer includes replacing the current low capacity of transmission network into higher capacity. Traditional network to serve traditional service (voice and SMS) will require several E1 transmissions to connect one BTS to the BSC. To meet to requirement on mobile broadband service, this connection should be upgraded to the higher capacity link e.g. optical fiber, SDH/SONET since there will be huge traffic will flow on this transport layer from the mobile broadband customer that may come together at the same time. Data optimization on this transport layer should be planned preciously and detailed. Some areas where mobile broadband customer is very significant should have bigger capacity on transport layer rather than rural area

Telecommunication network

Another part of telecommunication network which should be optimized to have affordable mobile broadband service is technology platform which serving mobile broadband service. Evolution on telecommunication technology should be planned integrated by utilizing current technology. Mobile broadband provider with 3G platform should plan to migrate to the 4G technology as the next platform. Meanwhile mobile broadband provider with EVDO Rev A platform should plan to migrate to the EVDO Rev B to produce high speed internet access than previous platform.

Data optimization in these strategies is very expensive and need long term vision to develop. More over, integrating with current telecommunication network is mandatory to reduce the cost. Actually the cheaper data optimization on mobile broadband service is available and some of mobile broadband provider implement it to provide optimum service

The performance of telecommunication service is very critical issue and each of telecommunication should have accurate report statistic of telecommunication service for many purpose especially to manage the telecommunication system and telecommunication service. There are two things which should be monitored by generating the statistic performance to identify the quality of service. Telecommunication companies should identify how the performance statistic of telecommunication service and how the statistic performance of telecommunication service. Both are produced by collecting the data from the telecommunication core network and the application system which handled the telecommunication service.

Telecommunication companies usually will assign performance department to collect, process and generate both of performance statistic. To generate the performance statistic, performance team should do several efforts before they produce the final report that will be submitted to management. The thing that they will do:

1. Collecting the raw data from each element

With the high server capacity they have, performance team will collect the raw data of performance statistic with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) mechanism where periodically the raw data generated by each telecommunication system will be delivered to the performance server.

2. Processing the raw data

Based on the raw data generated by each of telecommunication system, the next level is processing them with many ways that could be process them using data base or manually scripting. When processing the raw data, they will take the critical information such as time of transaction, duration, charging and status of session and leave others one

3. Generating a final report

While the processing is complete, then they will generate the final report which could be in many formats such as excel sheet or PDF. The final report of telecommunication performance is also displayed in simple format but clearly. The report will identify the current performance of telecommunication service

Performance statistic of telecommunication is very urgent to identify the current telecommunication system and telecommunication service. With the performance statistic report, telecommunication companies then can decide which the best way they will take once anomaly happen to the telecommunication service

Performance of telecommunication services should be monitored every single hour to make sure that availability network is sufficient to handle traffic of telecommunication services. Performance of telecommunication service indicates whether telecommunication companies have a good or poor telecommunication system. Better performance of telecommunication service means better telecommunication network and vice versa. There are many ways how telecommunication companies monitor the performance of telecommunication service. They could be reporting the statistic of each service daily bases, alerting the resource availability of telecommunication infrastructures which handle telecommunication service via SMS and 24 hours monitoring to the each element of telecommunication infrastructures

1. Statistic report of telecommunication services

Telecommunication companies should generate of performance of telecommunication system every day. Statistic report will describe how the quality of telecommunication service they offered to the mobile telecommunication subscribers. Statistic report will also be used to analyze the whole telecommunication service when their revenue is going down.

2. Alerting resource availability

The whole of telecommunication infrastructures should be noticed how much the current occupancy, how much resource available. Both will be identified in percentage. Telecommunication company will broadcast SMS alerting to particular people who responsible to each telecommunication infrastructures that could be hourly bases. By alerting the resource availability, performance of telecommunication service can be monitored and quick response can be taken once anomaly happened to the telecommunication service

3. Twenty four hours monitoring

Telecommunication companies will put some people to work regularly twenty four hours and seven days to monitor each of telecommunication infrastructures. They will take quick action once a problem comes to the one or more telecommunication infrastructures. This team will notice the performance of telecommunication service at the first time once it goes down

Telecommunication companies will take further actions based on current performance of telecommunication service. For example, if the performance of broadband internet service is poor, they will analyze the statistic report, how often problems come to network element of broadband internet service. After they analyze the performance of telecommunication service for certainty period for example one month then they can decide which the best action they will take. In case of broadband internet service, telecommunication companies can increase the international bandwidth or install more Base Transceiver Station (BTS)

Intelligent Network (IN) is playing the key roll on the telecommunication infrastructures. The main function of Intelligent Network (IN) is to charge any transaction made by prepaid subscribers while accessing the telecommunication service such as mobile internet service. The key point is charging to the prepaid subscribers. Meanwhile postpaid subscriber will be done by another network element. This network element could be mediation server which collects the Code Detail Record (CDR) from another telecommunication infrastructure that generates the CDR. Intelligent Network (IN) is responsible to deduct subscriber’s balance while they retrieved the service they already requested such as mobile internet service . Any telecommunication infrastructures which give a charging to the subscribers should connect to the Intelligent Network (IN) with many kind protocols then deduct the subscriber’s balance while they are succeed to access it. The protocol could be http, telnet, SMPP, SMPP plus etc

For example subscriber makes a session through their laptop/computer to access wireless or mobile internet service. What will happen on the back end system during balance deduction are;

Charging system of wireless or mobile internet service will identify the subscribers profile on its database

Charging system of wireless or mobile internet service will query the subscriber status to the Intelligent Network

Charging system of wireless or mobile internet service will reserve mount of balance to access the traffic for some times

Intelligent Network (IN) will deduct the balance as much as requested by charging system of wireless or mobile internet service

Charging system of wireless or mobile internet service will request again mount of balance while the first request is used by subscriber

Intelligent Network (IN) will do the same until subscriber disconnect the session or has insufficient balance

Intelligent Network (IN) consist of several network element which responsible to different functions. They are:

Service Management Protocol (SMP

Service Control Protocol (SCP

Data Access Control Point (DACP)

Usually some telecommunication infrastructures which require connecting to Intelligent Network (IN) to deduct subscriber’s balance will not connect directly to SCP but they are using Intelligent Network (IN) gateway. As we know that telecommunication companies have many kinds of telecommunication services which handled by many telecommunication infrastructures to run the services. Each service usually will be handled by particular network elements. It means, there will be a lot of connection to Intelligent Network. Intelligent Network (IN) gateway is avoiding undesired Intelligent Network (IN) performance such high utilization

CDMA 1x 2000, GPRS, 3G or EVDO is wireless or mobile broadband internet service connection which has unstable connection. They will have different speed all the long time while you are trying to access. Sometimes you got a high speed connection and another time they will have poor connection. CDMA 1x 2000 and GPRS service are working on the same channel with voice and messaging (SMS) services. It means while the traffic of both voice and messaging are on high demand, the CDMA 1x 2000 or GPRS connection will get poor one. Giving a priority and capacity is applied to each BTS for all services which used the same RF resources. And usually Telecommunication Company is giving priority to voice and messaging services rather than data service. Both services also have bigger resource RF capacity on the BTS rather than data service or mobile broadband internet service. We can understand it since right now the high demand from subscribers is voice or messaging service

To avoid poor connection on mobile broadband internet service, usually Telecommunication Company applies several technical and non technical solutions on the current network infrastructures. Non technical solution could be limiting the capacity of wireless internet subscribers. It means that Telecommunication Company will not expand network infrastructures to accommodate new subscribers and they only maintain the current subscribers. Meanwhile technical solution could be;

Adding new network infrastructures to cover the poor performance on mobile broadband internet service at certainty areas

By this mechanism, it means Telecommunication Company should install Base Transceiver (BTS) at the areas where wireless or mobile broadband internet service is getting poor performance. This is expensive way and usually they will do this mechanism once those areas are definitely lack of RF resources

Applying different charging bases

This is to differentiate the quality of service on mobile broadband internet service. To the areas where no RF capacity issue, time base charging is the first option. Meanwhile to the areas experience lack of RF capacity, charging system base on volume is fairy. This is avoiding more complaints from subscribers

Both mechanisms above are caused by RF capacity issue. Meanwhile RF capacity is not the main point where unstable connection to wireless internet service is going on. The other one is international bandwidth capacity. To optimize international bandwidth capacity issue, Telecommunication Company could apply one of the following mechanisms;

Inserting bandwidth management to the existing network infrastructures

Telecommunication Company will limit the bandwidth capacity to each protocol while subscribers browse to internet. For example, streaming video will only have 5 Mbps to all subscribers, downloading file has 5 Mbps, http protocol is highest priority etc

Inserting cache/shape engine

By this mechanism, Telecommunication Company will give an option to their subscribers whether the traffic they will retrieve on the laptop/compute is shaped or normal. While they choose shaping option, the speed will be faster but the quality image will decrease
