Telecommunication companies which has wireless internet service such CDMA 1x and GPRS are not recommended to provided BlackBerry service due to internet access speed reason. However, wireless internet service they already have can be utilized to provide the similar service on the Blackberry service such as email service, Facebook application and messaging service (Yahoo Messanger, Gtalk, WLM etc). Other applications also can be developed there to differentiate it with the service on the mobile broadband service. BREW platform is the term to overcome the problem on wireless internet service to introduce high application on the low and middle mobile phone

To deploy facebook application on wireless internet service, telecommunication companies should prepare below network infrastructures:

client server BREW application

wireless internet network which including Public Data Serving Node (PDSN), Charging Gateway, AAA server and CDMA network which including BTS, BSC and HLR

Internet gateway to connect to outside (Facebook.com)

The key point to introduce Facebook application on wireless internet service which actually has speed up to 153,6 kbps is deploying client – server BREW application. The key parameters while deploying client – server application are:

How much maximum speed can be consumed by low end mobile phone which will access Facebook application

Memory utilization and disk capacity that will be allocated on the mobile phone

Client application in this case is Facebook client that will be inserted on the mobile phone with BREW platform. Algorithm and applications details should be pre-defined and should match with the Server before they deployed on the mobile phone. Meanwhile Server application is middle ware server which interact with mobile phone and facebook server. Beside the algorithm and protocol that should have match with the client, server application should proper and same with algorithm on the facebook server as well. This algorithm which called Facebook Algorithm Programming Interface (API) should be synchronized every time once facebook server made any changing

Network Element of Wireless Internet Service

Wireless internet service includes CDMA and GSM platforms and its next generation network e.g. 3G, 4G and EVDO platforms. In terms of CDMA platform, there are many network elements of wireless internet service on the CDMA platform which involve on the data service call flow such AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting), Public Data Serving Node (PDSN), Home Local Register (HLR) and charging system

Wireless internet service call flow on Radio Frequency level

Mobile internet service session which comes from modem or mobile phone is the first initialization of the wireless internet service call flow. Radio Frequency will reserve the resource for this session if any resource is available. I case, radio frequency resource is full capacity then network busy notification will be sent to mobile internet service session

Wireless internet service call flow on Public Data Serving Node (PDSN)

Public Data Serving Node PDSN will process the entire of wireless internet service call flow. Public Data Serving Node PDSN will communicate with the Base Station Controller through the BSC PCF address (interface A10/A11). Public Data Serving Node (PDSN) connects to the AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) servers, allocating IP address for the subscriber, maintaining the session including disconnect the session. Session which comes from BSC will be forwarded by PDSN to AAA server for authentication process at the first stage. While authentication process is pass, PDSN will allocate a IP address for the subscriber.

Wireless Internet Service Call flow on AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting)

Telecommunication companies could implement AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) into two stages where authentication and accounting call flow could land into different network element. This mechanism has many benefits and can be implemented for many purpose such as accounting forwarding, proxy accounting etc. Authentication process will identify several of authentication information while session arrives on authentication server such as username, password, domain and IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identification). Authentication will acknowledge the authentication process if the session meets the requirement (username, password, domain and IMSI is valid). In case one or more of authentication information is not passed then authentication service will reject the session

Accounting process will be executed by charging system if telecommunication companies divide AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) process into two stages

There will be a lot of work should be done while they are receiving a lot of complaints from their subscribers according to Value Added Service (VAS) service through mobile internet service. VAS service is involving entire of network elements which to run voice call service and for some VAS services through mobile internet service they involve network element of data service. it is more difficult to identify the root cause of problem and fix it if its VAS service through mobile internet service is involving data service equipment. It means that telecommunication companies should check the entire of network element to find and fix it. There will be many three parties which responsible to the application service and vendors which expert on the telecommunication core network such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS), charging gateway, Intelligent Network, Public Data Serving Node (PDSN), Data Communication such as router, catalyst and load balancer

Value Added Service (VAS) through mobile internet servicewhich involves data service equipment such as download contents, mobile shopping, subscription service and service based on BREW platform, it is very though to identify partial problem such as error “network busy” during certainty period e.g. busy hour rather than we notice that the service goes down. While telecommunication companies experience this partial problem for example partial problem on download contents on BREW platform, the action they will do to identify root cause of problem and fix it soon are;

1. Identifying the pattern of problem through the mobile phone/ handset

Collecting the pattern of errors while subscriber experience such as whether subscriber completely getting a problem while accessing the download content, mobile shopping and subscription services or they are getting problem while accessing to particular application and what the message will appear on the mobile phone/handset while problem is coming

2. Identifying the Radio Frequency (RF) capacity

Network busy is the common issue on wireless/mobile internet service including Value Added Service (VAS). If the location which covers the service is having good quality of signal but the service is still getting problem, it means that RF capacity is not contributing to this partial problem. Confirmation that the capacity of signal is sufficient to carry out the traffic including VAS service is needed to go to the further investigation

3. Tracing the session from the central process of data service such as Public Data Serving Node (PDSN)

All sessions to access the entire of application on VAS services will go through PDSN node. By tracing a particular session which experience error “network busy”, we can identify whether the request from subscriber already sent to the application server and responded back to the subscriber or not

4. Identifying packet data received at data communication equipment, application server, Domain Name Server (DNS) and charging gateway

By tracing to the application systems related to VAS service we can identify packet data which come and go the each application service and analyze whether each element already receive and response the request from subscriber or not. This section will identify which part of network element that did not run proper while a request from subscriber is coming

When subscriber makes a dial session to have data service (wireless or mobile broadband internet service) on the CDMA platform, the first stage it will go through the telecommunication system such as BTS, BSC and MSC. Mobile Switching (MSC) will indicate that it is a data service session than MSC will forward the request to the Public Data Serving Node (PDSN). PDSN is the central processing of data service on the CDMA platform. In term of voice session it has the same function as MSC meanwhile SMS service, it is like Short Messaging Service Centre (SMSC).

PDSN process the request before subscriber reach the internet and do the necessary action to make sure that the session reach the right another telecommunication network while make a data service session. Globally, PDSN has functions as below;

1. Manage the radio-packet (RP) interface that connect to BSC

As we know that the main issue on wireless internet service is lack of Radio Frequency (RF). While subscriber is connected but do nothing (dormant time) session between subscriber, BTS and BSC will be terminated but connection between BSC to PDSN still there until subscriber browse to generate the traffic

2. Provide routing and packet management service

Session from subscriber will be routed to internet gateway so then subscriber able to browse to internet. In another case subscribers will browse to internal application service such as Value Added Service (VAS). PDSN will route the subscriber’s request to proper application service

3. Applies IP services

Each session from subscriber will be allocated a certainty IP Pool. Each session has different IP Pool. PDSN will allocate this IP Pool to each subscriber

4. Collects packet billing data

Usually charging system is done by another network element (charging gateway). PDSN will forward the charging process to the another network element

5. Authentication packet connections

At the first when the subscriber make a dial up session, PDSN will sent to authentication to AAA server to identify whether this is valid subscriber or not

The important thing related to PDSN is Authentication, Accounting and Authorization (AAA) process. Accounting is related to charging process that will be done by charging gateway. Subscriber will be charged based on policy was applied on the charging gateway to each subscriber. Authentication process is identification process to each subscriber before they are allowed to access the internet. The things that will be checked by Authentication server are account (username and password) and mobile phone number(MIN – Mobile Identification Number). Meanwhile Authorization process is the access policy to the subscriber
